Orange Sky Memories

What are orange sky memories? Ooooh I can’t wait to share with you, gentle reader. Before I share more in this week’s post, here’s a bit about me. And, if you are seeking weekly, colorful paintings in your world (and why not, right?), you can sign up here.

Onward to take a look at this week’s painting.

Why Orange Sky Memories

This week’s painting starts at a new travel location! A few weeks ago, I shared we stayed on the sound side of Topsail Beach.

Here’s a glimpse of our view on the first night of our arrival. See that “tease” of luscious orange, pink and gold on the horizon?

Paint Paint Paint

I painted every chance I could at this place. Even when the sky was blue. But blue or orange, I did a gazillion color sketches; some as small as this week’s finished painting: 4×4 inches. Others slightly bigger at 4×6 inches.

Here’s the view of the sound side view from our house, also now known as a fab painting place as well as the amazing view of clouds, the marsh and more.

Memories and More

One day, after a painting session, my spouse and I hopped into his (beautiful, handmade) kayaks. Here’s a picture of the kayaks at a sa-weet location in Maine last year. I just thought you might enjoying seeing the work of the real craftsman in our house.

Anywho, we decided to cross the sound side of Topsail Beach and venture off through the marshes. Note to self: this is and can be an exciting adventure in getting lost. And, shazam did we ever.

Meaning? Meaning we kayaked over to the Intracoastal Waterway all the while, “oooohing” and “ahhhing” at the birds flying overhead and the fish flopping up and out of the water in front of us. We also saw plenty of speedy boats zipping along the waterway.

But! As we meandered back towards our house, we got completely turned around in the marshes. Dead ends? Yes! Going in circles? Oh yeah.

That Lost Feeling

As the sun starts to dip lower towards the horizon, and we pass a man made object (baby gate?) in the marsh for the “X” time (HA!!!), I said that I was ready to call the equivalent of sound side Triple A service.

My other half said “What’s that?” I said I’m calling “Tuck’s Water Shuttle” for a ride back to the house. We both laughed out loud. Why?

Tain’t no way Tuck’s would have been able to pick us up in the marshes! Why? A quick look in the water and we could easily see the sand. Meaning? Meaning we were in 3 feet maybe 4 feet of water. Thankfully, Mr. Himself made the decision to step out of his kayak and into the water. As he stood up and looked…voila…he could clearly see a way out. In no time we were back on our way towards the dock and our fabulous sound side location.

This Week’s Painting

Here’s a tiny 4×4 inch painting on panel that I started as the sky turned a gazillion colors of red and then orange. I started the painting in acrylics at that fab sound side house and finished it – from memory – here in the studioo in Raleigh. I’m excited to share this painting and three others will be on view at a new Raleigh location soon. Stay tuned for more details.

Other Painting News

I’ll be heading up to Crossroads Art Center this week to add some new paintings and participate in a private event for the Travel Bloggers Conference. I’m excited to add some new paintings to my gallery wall there. Stop by if you are planning to be in Richmond, VA this summer.

  1. Your paintings, including this one, or maybe especially this one, make me look more carefully at things. This color orangey-red clearly is out there in the sky but I’ve never noticed it and will look more carefully for it now! Very fun post.

    1. Hi Beth, I’m so glad you think you might see more orange-eeee skies after seeing this painting. Me? Confess I’m taking a bit of creative license to make the sky this orange. But as I painted it, I thought, why not? TY for being here! xoxoxo
