Opposites Attract

What do I mean opposites attract? Ooohhhh I can’t wait to share with you gentle reader. Before I share more in this week’s post, here’s a bit about me. And, if you are seeking weekly, colorful paintings in your world (and why not, right?), you can sign up here.

Onward to take a look at this week’s painting.

Contraries Attract

Imagine if – instead of a blue sky – it was orange. Then what would everything else look like? In addition to thinking about complimentary colors like blue and orange, I love seeing analogous colors too. (Analogous meaning using colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel).

See? Here are three analogous colors on the left and then two crazy compliments on the right.

Red violet, red and orange are the analogous colors. And the two blues are compliments of that orange. I also had white on my palette. But otherwise, these are the colors I used.

Opposites Attract Painting

Here’s the painting I did. It’s a study for a larger painting I’m working on. The challenge was thinking of the compliment of the things I was painting. Sky blue? Not in this painting it’ s orange. Water green? Nope in this painting it’s pink-ish. I’m still percolating on how far to push the compliments in this composition. For now, I sure had fun thinking about all the possibilities here and then choosing.

Here’s the painting its 8×8 inches, painted in acrylics on cold press paper. The painting is helping me figure out a larger 36×36 inch painting currently in progress. So, thank you for looking today!

And while we’re talking about color, here’s a tip of the hat to mighty painter and eccentric color guru David Hockney. As you probably already know, he died last week at the ripe old age of 88. I love his playful color sense and – yes – his paintings too.

What’s New

What’s new in your world gentle reader? Are you seeing things in color or maybe from a completely different perspective? If so, please do share more details (and color preferences too). I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

  1. Cool painting, Julie! I look forward to seeing the larger painting, too. Enjoyed your description of analogous colors. So apt with the work of David Hockney. He was definitely a genius with colors; an artist whose work I thoroughly enjoy. May he rest in peace.

    1. Hi Alexandra, Wasn’t Hockney a genius and inspiration? I read that he signed his letters “Love life. David Hockney.” Amen to that, eh? xoxo

  2. This is stunning and otherworldly while of this world! Love it, Julie! And learned a few things along with it. Hope these colors stick for the big painting.
