The Sun Can Save the Sky

Wait…the sun can save the sky? Really? Really! But before diving into this week’s post, here’s a bit about me. And, if you are seeking weekly, colorful paintings in your world (and why not, right?), you can sign up here.

Onward to take a look at this week’s painting.

How Can the Sun Save the Sky

So first, how about I share this week’s painting? Then I’ll offer some ideas on sun saving. This painting is tiny especially compared to last week! Here it is: it’s 4×8 inches painted in oils on panel. It is for sale, framed for $100. Contact me here if you’re interested in it.

The inspiration for this painting came as I was sitting outside on our back deck earlier this year. It was already dusk. There was a sliver of the moon wayyyyy up high. But off to the west, the sun was offering last minute brilliant orange and gold blasts of color on clouds above. I didn’t even photograph it.

But the image was so vivid, I knew I would paint it. And, so here’s the best of what I can recall from memory.

Dark Days Need Sun

OK so this headline states the obvious. But I am also sharing a metaphorical interpretation. We are living in pretty dark times. And, I painted this painting in the hopes of offering a sign of light in this time of darkness.

And, I am inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem “Of What Surrounds Me.” I love that, in this poem she writes,

I simply can’t
Say whatever it is I am saying without
At least one skyful.

So when all else fails, gentle reader, if you can, go outside and look up. Perhaps you will see the sun saving the sky, too!

  1. When the moon and a sun touched sky shine together it’s magic isn’t it? You capture the wonder of that beautifully in this painting.
