Hooray for Pistolet
What’s up with and why hooray for Pistolet? Ooh I cannot wait to share with you.
We are still on the wonderful, rugged, desolate and desperately beautiful island of Newfoundland.
This week’s painting is part of my ongoing quest to share, hopefully, a glimpse of the natural beauty here.
Near the Other Raleigh
Pistolet Bay Provincial Park is located wayyyy at the northern end of the Northern Cape of Newfoundland. And, it’s around the corner from Raleigh Newfoundland. We hail from Raleigh NC. So imagine our delight at seeing we’re not so far from home after all!

Travel Tip
If you are looking for a travel tip, consider Pistolet, Newfoundland. Yes it’s about as far north as you can go. But the sights, sounds (my binoculars and the Merlin app are in overdrive with all the beautiful bird sightings and calls), hikes, fab food (dine at the Daily Catch in St Lunaire-Gritique our best meal out yet), history (L’Anse Aux Meadows) and the mighty, meticulously maintained Pistolet Bay Provincial Park Campground will surely delight you.
Other sleeping options are available, of course, if camping isn’t your thing.
Why Hooray Pistolet
Let me list a few reasons:
- Friendly rangers – two of whom stopped by to say hi, offered local history and bird intel
- Inspiring neighbors – we met a couple from British Columbia who have a tandem kayak. They sea kayak together to remote islands including near Pistolet
- More inspiring neighbors -we met another couple from Raleigh NC (originally from Iowa) who have camped in Newfoundland five times!
- Comfy gathering space – the reason we met all of these friendly people is Pistolet campground has a wonderful shelter where you can prep meals and clean dishes and…meet people!
This Week’s Painting
Here’s the view from the Pistolet Campground shelter. Can you say beautiful boreal forest? And, those are the Long Range mountains the distance.

This sweet painting is 4×6 inches, painted in gouache and a reminder that there is still beauty in this world. I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed painting it.
