The Creative Life and Art
Welcome! My name is Julie Dyer Holmes. I love to paint and tell stories. And, I’m devoted to painting the way, you might be devoted to a dear friend.
Read on to hear more stories. Or, visit my colorful work inspired by my imagination, Impressionism and daily outdoor walks and adventures here. I am grateful you are here!

Seize the Day
The pandemic directly influenced my work in several ways. First, I had expected to be a figurative painter. But as the pandemic evolved, I shifted my point of view. I looked at what I could paint at home, right inside (as in that quirky interpretation of our kitchen which could be anyone’s sunny kitchen, right?) and outside my window and in the neighborhood.
Second, I took an online course that introduced me to a new, yet very old, medium: gouache. I love oil paint for its dreamy and creamy properties. And, I love gouache for its rich pigments and easy clean up while on the road. Whether I’m on the road or at home, I also rely on my trusty pencil to draw in my sketchbook everyday.
The pandemic and family/friend loss nudged us to seize the day. How? We bought a tiny teardrop camper (aka Lola – see her painting by yours truly below) that we can tow with our car. So since 2021, we have hit the road and I paint in my “mobile studio” as we go.

A combination of fantastic road trip vistas (Maine, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and North Carolina) and treasured views once we return home, generate a never ending source of painting ideas!
See below a painting I did on location while we were on the road along the coast. How about those two trees? Aren’t they acting all happy that they have the best front row seats with views of the ocean?

If you are interested in seeing work as I complete it, consider subscribing to my weekly blog. I promise to add some color and inspiration to your inbox on a weekly basis!

Paintings For Sale
If you are interested in looking at works of art for sale, please visit the online painting gallery. And, if you want to see my work in person before you buy, contact me.
In 2025, I was lucky to show my new work many times including with three other top notch, professional artists in my downtown Raleigh Studio. You can read about that sale here.
More show adventures are in the works for this year. To be first in line for notifications about upcoming shows, sign up here.
And, remember, I paint and draw everyday and also publish a new painting each week. See that painting of the moon and sea? I painted that from my imagination after we got home from the road for the third time in a year. Sometimes, being home and painting in my tiny home studio is the best!
