Favorite Things: a painter’s 2020 journey
One of my favorite songs is “Favorite Things” by Julie Andrews in the musical Sound of Music. I love the way her voice and music lilt upwards as she describes her feelings for some of her favorite things. For instance, she loves “Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens.”
Who wouldn’t love some occasional rain drops on roses and the tickle of whiskers on kittens? These are universal experiences that everyone can imagine.

One Painter’s Journey
In 2020, I invite you to join me as I look for and paint favorite things in my yard, on my morning dog walks, and here in my neighborhood in Raleigh, NC. I have already painted some favorite things to share with you. And, I will post them here. My goal is to share a painting a week with you this year. And I would love to make it easy for you to purchase this and any future paintings. I hope to spread some joy and visual beauty. Somehow, in this crazy world, it seems we can all use more joy, more beauty and I hope these Favorite Things will help accomplish just that!

Oh my goodness I love drawing and painting figs! So, you can expect to see more of these sweet paintings. In fact, I wrote about this obsession with figs while we were still living in Philadelphia. Fortunately, each fig is unique and has it’s own personality.
So, as you might have guessed, this week’s favorite thing is a painting of a luscious fig that I found on my neighbor’s tree late last summer. It was a hot and sultry summer day. And, this fig was ripe and about ready to fall on the ground when I picked it off the tree. It was warm in my hand as I carried it home to set it on a block of cedar. This little painting is only 4″ by 4″; a perfect size for that spot in your kitchen or hallway that needs ‘a little something.’
