Among the Trees
Where can you be among the trees? Oh shazam I cannot wait to share with you gentle reader! But first, I’d like to welcome you here. Where’s “here?” How about a quick back story?
I love to paint. Where? Well, I paint at my home studio, outdoors and on the road. On the road? Yes! For several months each year, we tow a small teardrop camper (and my mobile painting studio). I bring my paints and sketch and paint as we travel and trek. This year, we made it as far north as Newfoundland. Now we are back in Raleigh, North Carolina.
No matter where we are, each week I share a painting, sketch or study. My hope is that what I draw or paint might delight and inspire you. Sign up here to receive these colorful painting posts in your inbox.
This Week’s Setting
Guess where I painted this painting? OK technically, I painted this week’s painting here in Raleigh, NC. But! It’s inspired by this painting called “Hooray for Pistolet.” And, guess what? Pistolet is a beautiful setting and provincial campground in northern Newfoundland. Just down the road from this campground is Raleigh, Newfoundland. If you check out that link, you’ll notice that the town used to be called “Ha Ha Bay.”
Two park rangers at Pistolet told us the origin story (as in the above Wikimedia link). The lasting memory is the beautiful, scruffy and ever present Black Spruce Trees. The wind and weather these trees endure is incredible. And, it shows. And, I saw Balsam Fir trees which are used as Christmas trees in Newfoundland.
Here’s the painting which is 6×12 inches and painted on Arches Oil Paper. It’s possible this painting will “grow” into a much larger version. So? So I’m going to let it “simmer” here in the studio for awhile. Meantime, here it is. I hope you enjoy it!

What’s New with You
Have you got any art news to share? If so, please let me know. I would love to hear from you in the comments below. (Hey that rhymes too ;-D)

Learned a lot with this post. “TL DR” is new to me. The link in your post led to its definition but if I was supposed to get something else I didn’t as an FYI.
Plus th distinctions between Black Spruce and Balsam Fir are good for me to learn.
The painting this week has a moodiness that I like and seems new or not something I’ve noted in other paintings as much as I see it here. Seems perfect for a Newfoundland painting and it is a bit mesmerizing here!
Hi Beth, HA! TLDR isn’t exactly art-related so you can give that a skip.
I’m glad you see the moodiness in the painting. Raleigh, Newfoundland is definitely cooler (temperatures and colors), windier and gray-er than here in Raleigh NC in the sunny south. And, that’s just the start of all the differences. TY so much for reading and commenting here. xoxo
