Wait Raleigh Newfoundland Really?

“Wait, Raleigh, Newfoundland, really?” Really, gentle reader and I can’t wait to share more. But first, if you are new here and seeking weekly, colorful paintings in your world (and why not, right?), you can sign up here.

Onward to take a look at this week’s painting which is really a sneak peak of a much larger work.

Let’s Dig in to “Raleigh, Newfoundland”

Recall that a little over a year ago, my better half and I took our car, camper named, Lola, and dearly departed pup, Chloe, all the way up the east coast. Then we took the ferry to Newfoundland where we camped, himself kayaked, I painted, we hiked for four weeks on the “Rock.”

I did quite a few small gouache paintings while I was there. And, along the way, we stumbled upon Raleigh Newfoundland. We camped in nearby Pistolet Bay Campground. This area is remote and rugged. Everything there, the wildlife, prickly black spruce trees, dusty red roads showing their origin story from iron minerals used in the asphalt suggests rugged living. I confess I was grateful to be there in June when days were really mild and nights were cool, perfect sleeping weather.

And, I knew, at some point, I would paint the landscape and view from our campground just outside of Raleigh, Newfoundland. Here is a sneak peak of a part of the four foot by two foot painting in gallery wrapped canvas called “Raleigh, Newfoundland.” It’s one of four paintings I’ll have in a group show called “Engage: Art + Nature + Poetry.” Here’s a part of the painting.

Raleigh Newfoundland Painting

I used a cool quinacridone magenta for the underpainting here. If you come see this painting in person, you will be able to see this cool color peak through if you look closely. Throughout the painting, I had to think of ways to show the difference in the “air” in this place compared to the sunny, humid, steamy North Carolina skies of the two other landscape paintings that I’ll have on view in this show.

Speaking of the show, here are the details:

Engage: Art + Nature + Poetry

  1. This painting section is stunning! I love learning about the under painting and how it impacts the “mood” of the painting. Darn it. Wish I could see this in person come November 7. Well done!
