Ahoy from Maine
Ahoy from Maine, gentle reader! We have been on the road for about a week now. And, I’ll share a bit more. But first, if you are new here and seeking weekly, colorful paintings in your world (and why not, right?), you can sign up here.
Onward to take a look at this week’s painting.
Road Trip News
Here’s a gouache painting from last year’s road trip. I combined it with a few ink pen doodles to add some whimsy and fun. I’ll share more from this year’s road trip in the week’s ahead. And, I’ll be showing a few in a show at Gallery 20 in Raleigh later this year, too.
But I am getting ahead of myself. Here’s this week’s painting.

The Road Ahead
For the next few weeks we are visiting family and friends in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Canada. How lucky is that?
A few thoughts of our experience so far. We left Raleigh August 20th in the midst of a major drought and heatwave. I keep telling myself that’s how August in Raleigh rolls. But whew this year’s August seemed exceptionally hot.
Imagine, a day later, our delight when we could hike in the Shenandoah Valley wearing an extra layer of clothing. And, as planned the trip, we had difficulty finding a 1-night weekend campsite in Pennsylvania so forged on to New York. Initially, we planned to boon dock at a Walmart. But the harsh sun and packed parking lot did not inspire us. So we kept going till we found a cheap and cheerful campsite in the woods.
The next morning we woke up to rain and the call of the Easter Wood Peewee. Ahhhhhh!
Days Ahead
In the days ahead we will be at a kayaking conference in Maine. David is the experienced kayaker and I’m a novice (at best!). So I’ll be curious to hear kayaking stories and…well…laying low, don’t ya know. Heaven knows David has listened to painters either in Philly or at home in Raleigh. I’m glad to observe and enjoy.
So, I’ll sign off here in the hopes that you are well, gentle reader. Sending you hopes for warm colors and cooler days ahead.

Really like the “freedone”of these pieces with seemingly random “doodles.” Makes me look at the work with slower gaze I think. And that shade of purple! Love that.
Safe and fun journeys!
Hiya Beth! TY there is something about the freedom and constraint of being on the road that brings on the doodles. TY for looking and commenting. xoxo
Sounds like a great trip! Have a wonderful time.
Hi Claudia! Thank youuuu 😀
Your trip sounds wonderful, Julie! I’m so happy for you. The painting is lovely, too. I like how you added some of the outlines in pen. It also reminds me of Asian art. Enjoy! xoxo
Hi Alexandra, Wish you were here! TY for your thoughtful observations xoxo
Sounds like cool moments that are much appreciated! I like the lines too.
Super cool moments, Dawn! (Literally and figuratively). Sending cool breezes your way. xoxo
