Why Warmth
This time of year, for me, it’s all about warmth and light. Luckily, I have access to both. In the studio, the west facing light is fantastic, especially late in the day. So, even though I say I’m an outdoor painter? I am very (very!) happy to be an indoor painter this time of year.
Second, we have a steam furnace and radiators in this 1929 house. That’s right! Even though we’re in the south, we have steam heat. And, I love the heat from the radiators. They warm up my socks in the morning and provide just enough heat to keep us cozy (with sweaters and lots of layers, of course).
Third, it’s persimmon painting season and the reddish, orange-ish color of its skin is a (warm!) sight to see this time of year. As I painted this sweet, round, chubby persimmon in the west light of my studio, all I kept thinking of was how warm and welcoming it is.

Recently, a reader and caring friend mentioned that I ought to consider sharing more “authentic” me stuff here. I’m incredibly hesitant about doing this but here goes. And, it’s kinda sad. Our beloved Chloe dog has a pretty big tumor on her spleen.
She’s in otherwise really good shape. My better half, David, still takes her on epic 1-2 hour walks at least once a week. And she gets three walks everyday. But we learned that this tumor could go rogue at any minute and be lethal. So later this week, Chloeeee is having surgery to remove the tumor. We are hoping for recovery of about 2-weeks from the surgery.
So, gentle readers, please add us and our much (much!) beloved Chloe to your healing thoughts, prayers, dog prayer circles, you name it, we’ll appreciate it.

The persimmon is such a discovery to from not many years back. The color, the flavor have made this time of year so rich and beauty-filled. Your painting is proof positive of that! Curious what the paint color is called that you used?
Very sad to read about Chloe’s tumor. Darn it. Without formally naming it, I believe I do have a circle of dog-loving folks who will send those powerful positive vibes to all of you. Hope the surgery is a success in all ways.
Hi Beth, I love persimmon color and confess (eeek) I have never tasted one. By the time I finish painting ’em they just look a bit gnarly. The color is a combination of Cadmium Orange and Hansa yellow on the lighter side. And, Cadmium orange and quinacridone red and whatever else I can mix to get kind of a rusty orange ;-D Fun!
Ya – I bet you have a dog prayer circle (including Trudy and Archie)!!! So please ask them to keep their tails and paws crossed for our beloved Chloe-girl. xoxo

The painting is so lovely, Julie. You’ve captured the warmth of the scene well and I especially like how you rendered the napkin/cloth upon which the persimmon is resting.
Steam heat is fabulous; I can imagine that it helps inject some much needed humidity into the dryness of this cold air.
