Sweetpotato Tribute

Here’s a sweetpotato tribute on this Thanksgiving Day 2025. And, before reading on, if you want more information about me, check here.

Sweet Potato or Sweetpotato

Before I share the painting, I have a quirky nuance to share about – well – sweetpotatoes. As I write the word sweetpotato here, I get the red squiggly line in my blogging platform. What does that mean? Red squiggly under a word means sweetpotato is misspelled. But it’s not! Thanks to a friend (thanks Jane!) who recently shared this quirky bit of info with me.

There’s a campaign here in NC (ya it’s been going on since 1989) to change sweet potato to sweetpotato. Here’s an explanation if you’re interested. And, all joking aside, it’s important. And, you can even sign a petition about it here. I did!

Sweetpotato Tribute Painting Please

OK here’s the painting. And I absolutely loved painting this one. Why? It has lots of references to my Northern upbringing and present day Southern Living. But mostly, I loved figuring out the luscious colors in that sweetpotato. It was a fun adventure. This painting is 6×12 inches, painted in oils on a 2 inch cradled panel. Meaning? Meaning it’s all ready to hang on the wall. Woot! And, it’s yours for $200. Contact me here if you’re interested.

More Backstory on the Sweetpotato Tribute

For more history of sweetpotatoes, here’s a nifty article from the Library of Congress. And, the correct spelling of our beloved vegetable is missing here too. But it amazes me to think that this vegetable has been around (in Peru) since 750 BCE.

But! I digress again and given that it’s Thanksgiving, I have sweetpotato casserole to cook! You? Whether you enjoy mashed (aka Irish) potatoes or sweetpotatoes, I wish you and your family and friends a Happy Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving! This post made me smile … and chuckle. Executive director of the Sweetpotato Commission? Now there’s a job I’d never considered! (And the red squiggly line appears on this correct spelling here!) Fun to learn all this. I’m not a petition signer typically but I did today! Let’s get this right!

Your painting makes me want to spend more time looking at it. There’s your signature sense of whimsy but some wonderful details and shades of color!

    1. TY Beth! And wahoo thank you for signing the petition, too.

And, it’s the ultimate compliment to say you want to look and then, look some more at my painting. TY and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours tooooo Beth xoxo

  2. Happy Thanksgiving, Julie! I love how you painted the sweet potato! The color and values as well as application of the paint is spot on! Really nice.

    1. Hi Alexandraaaa,

The new secret weapon in my painting quiver is the …. palette knife. I used that late in the painting of that sweepotato and it seems to have helped! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours toooooo xoxo
