The Timeless Sky and Sea

These days I find respite in the timeless sky and sea. Why? I look forward to sharing with you.

If you’re new here, welcome! Each week I share a painting, sketch or study. My hope is that what I draw or paint might delight or even inspire you. Sign up here to receive these colorful painting posts in your inbox.

Back Story

We are at Topsail Island, NC visiting family and celebrating our anniversary. Shazam I can’t believe we eloped 26 years ago. Insert heart emoji here ;-D

This Week’s Painting

It is hot as h-e-double-toothpick here! Even so, I love hiding out at the south end of the island. We bring food, beverages and stay in our shabby sheik, pet-friendly motel.

The best feature? A north facing covered deck located right on the beach. That’s right! A painter’s dream.

Here’s an 8×8 inch gouache painting of the view from the second floor of the Sea Vista Motel in Topsail Beach, NC. This painting is for sale for $85. Interested? Message me through my contact page if you’re interested.

Bonus

In addition to this beautiful view, there’s a bonus. See that little path in the lower right corner? Turn right there and walk on the beach for ~a mile.

Guess what you’ll see?

Nothing!

That’s right!

You’ll see nothing but beautiful dunes, sky and sea. And that’s all because people on this island fought off development here. For the back story (and hopefully a dose of inspiration for us all to keep fighting because…insert fist pump emoji here) visit the Coastal Land Trust Website here.

How Are You

  1. A serene and peaceful painting yet also with lots of movement captured by your flowy brushwork. Lovely! So happy to hear that there are still places in the world untouched by “development.” In spite of the latest terrifying reminders of its power, nature continues to inspire me whilst observing its peaceful side like sunny skies, puffy clouds, and summer’s bounty of fruit – just to name a few. xoxo

    1. Hiya Alexandra, TY so much! I’m glad you, too, are finding respite in nature these days. xoxo

  2. What a serene painting. Love all the blues and endlessness of the sea and sky. A good reminder that the events of the moment in the human world ARE fleeting. (Albeit with lasting ramfications but I take comfort in the acknowledgement of change, constant change like the tides.)

Shocked to read Sea Vista is for sale. Sad. Hope it carries on. For the right person or people, it seems like a great opportunity! Fingers crossed and hurricanes kept away!

    1. Hiya Beth! TY for taking time to look at the painting 👋💕

Oopsie Sea Vista isn’t for sale. It is located near the southern end of the island. That part of the island is undeveloped and includes an Audubon Bird Sanctuary.

A year ago, that southern part of the island was up for sale. A very wealthy buyer made an offer to develop the land.

Topsail Beach locals and a few other people did a lot to get the seller to reconsider.

Outcome? Coastal Landtrust (a NC-based non-profit) and a non-profit called ConserveThePoint raised millions of dollars to buy the land from the seller.

Now this beautiful part of Topsail Beach (~100 acres) is protected so that anyone can walk along the beach and see beach, dunes, sky and sea!!!

      Hooray!

So Sea Vista isn’t for sale nor is the southern tip of Topsail beach!

      Yay!!!

      TY and xoxo 👋🌊💕

    1. Hiya Kathy!
