It Starts with Sketching

What do I mean “it starts with sketching?” I can’t wait to share with you, gentle reader. But first, here’s a warm and colorful welcome. If you’re new, know that this is a place where I share colorful paintings and adventures each week.

My hope is that these color clad images, and sketches will delight your eyes and lift your spirits. Sign up here to receive these weekly posts in your inbox.

OK! Here’s this week’s sketch.

Why Sketch

First, I think “sketching” is a no risk or low risk way of trying out new ideas. In this sketch, I am thinking about capturing the boreal forest and rocky landscape of Newfoundland as we zipped down the highway in our car and little camper. Who knows where this will lead!

Second, sketching can also mean written words too, right? So, I have written down some ideas of feelings, sounds and experiences I am having on this road trip. Of course, some of the experiences, seeing whales or the incredible diving bird, the gannett, leave me speechless.

Third, if you’re looking for that “heads up” to give a new habit, like sketching, a whirl, here’s your chance. Go for it! I think you’ll find sketching brings a new way to look at your world.

We are still on the road so I will keep this week’s post short and sweet. But not without asking…

How Are You

What’s happening in your world, gentle reader? I certainly would love to know. I look forward to hearing from you in the comments below.

  1. I love sketching, it helps to solve problems before we commit to paint. A great tool in one’s toolbox, like squinting, and a viewfinder. : )
We spent 5 days in West Jefferson on the New River relaxing, biking, and painting last week. Being in nature is a balm.
Thank you for sharing your trek in nature, I feel the balm from here. xx

    1. Hi Denise! Ooohhh…that nature trek sounds fab. And you guys are helping that part of NC that has been hammered by that awful hurricane last year. Win win!!! xxoo back at ya

  2. Back-to-back message! I always forget to include my new website! Finally got it done, Julie! Thanks for your encouragement. Although it is my career work and not my art, I think my art shines through. Maybe one day soon I’ll create a painting site.
That’s what is happening in my world. : )
    Continued SAFE travels!!
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR INSPRIATION LOVELY FRIEND. xx

    1. Ahoy Denise! Please share your new website! Gotta spread the word for your work oh mighty and talented friend 👋💪💕

  3. I remember the one time I tried to sketch a swam near our home in Tulsa. I sat on one side of the fence and the swan was on the other side. Only when I was “drawing” or sketching did I notice the colors and rings around the swam’s eyes. Left me wondering how it was possible not to have seen those before then. So sketching = paying attention and really seeing for me. I can see that is true for you both in the sketch above and in the results from your paintings as well.

Good reminder to slow down and pay attention!

    1. Hiya Beth!
TY for such a thoughtful reply. Had no idea you tried sketching swans.

Now I will look at them differently👋💕
