Magical Tree

What’s the story behind magical trees? Stay tuned! We are in week five of our  east coast Canadian adventure.

One impression that lingers is the boreal forest present throughout Newfoundland. If I’m lucky enough to see one tree by itself, as in this painting, I wonder about its personality.

I’ll share more but here’s the 4×6 inch gouache painting.

Personality

This tree has a strong, independent presence. Like the people of Newfoundland itself, it loves this place…more than anything. If you had this color and water filled view everyday, wouldn’t you feel the same?

I loved the view here and hope to paint larger versions of it soon. Stay tuned!

How Are You

What is happening with you? I would love to hear what’s on your mind here today

  1. Yes, I would definitely feel the same! 🙂 I really like how you rendered the tree. So free and very pine/fir tree-like feeling. I also enjoy the palette you used and how the cool values you use for the sky and background contrast with the warm values of the foreground, with the less saturated violet in the foreground pulling them both together. Lovely! xxoo

    1. Thank you so much Alexandraaa! So many astute and painterly observations that I really appreciate. xxoo back at youuuuuuu

  2. I’m just so excited about this trip for you and David and your painting. This is SO different from other paintings you’ve done both while traveling and in general. The palette is gorgeous. I wonder about those lone trees. I’m learning there is a whole way of id-ing trees based on where they are. Just learning about this so more to be understood. Seems you’ve picked up on this just from staring at the Newfoundland landscape!

    1. Hiya Beth,

This one was fun to paint! TY for noticing. And, there’s definitely a unique character to the trees in Newfoundland and everywhere we look, eh? TY for keeping your eye tuned into this. xoxo

  3. Hi Julie- what a yummy color palette you used in this painting! You’re inspired by Newfoundland.
I’m not sure about lone tree biology or psychology, and I do think trees that live in places where weather is extreme are hardy and brave and adaptable.

    1. Hi Kathy!
This was a yummy warm color palette. Well, I’m not sure about the psychology of it all. But that tree is my inspiration for the hearty and downright tough and tumble people we met on this trip. Your words “brave and adaptable” definitely resonate! TY for reading along xoxo
